Frequently Asked Questions

Managing Challenging Behaviour FAQ's

Questions about the EDGE course

  1. What does the 'train the trainer' course involve?

Two days theory, covering legislation, risk assessment, incident reporting, communication and de-escalation skills etc - this is the most important part of the course because any form of breakaway must be self defence and undertaken as a last resort. The two final days of training cover the practical training of breakaway techniques.

  2. Does this course deal with the restraint of aggressive or challenging clients?

No. The course is based on communication skills and simple breakaway skills (wrist grabs, clothes grabs, hair pulls etc).

  3. I am not in nursing, is the course any good for me, e.g. retail, education, council?

Yes. The course covers the principles of managing challenging behaviour and can be adapted to any situation.

  4. Will it cover my area of expertise e.g. learning disability?

The public course is a generic course, teaching the principles of managing challenging behaviour. The expertise and experiences for your client group comes from you. The trainer has personal experience/expertise within Learning Disability, Mental Health and Elderly Care.

  5. Is the course just based on dealing with managing challenging behaviour from people we work with?

No. The skills in de-escalation and communication can be used with the public, family and staff members.

  6. I work with elderly clients, would the breakaway techniques be alright for my clients?

Yes. A gentle release is taught for elderly clients. This ensures that there is no/little harm  caused to either the client or the member of staff.

  7. Can I train other people to train their staff?

No. Our course allows you to train staff to use verbal and physical techniques for themselves within their own workplace only.

Attending this course will not 'qualify' you to deliver your own 'train the trainer' courses. EDGE trainers have years of clinical experience and hold high level qualifications and are therefore able to train at the required level.

  8. When can I use breakaway techniques?

Only in self defence, as a last resort when all attempts and de-escalation and communication have failed.

  9. Do I have to be super-fit to do the course?

No. The course is classed as STATIC training, which means that everything is controlled using loose grips. No hair is pulled and no-one is strangled. No-one goes to the floor as this is not a restraint course.

  10. Is the course accredited?

No. The EDGE managing challenging behaviour course has been designed to meet the standards set by the Institute of Conflict Management (ICM) who are a governing body who work closely with the Heath and Safety Executive (HSE). The trainer’s who deliver this course are all members of the ICM and strictly adhere to their guidelines. All trainer’s regularly attend trainer updates.
